The Hermitage of San Corrado Fuori le Mura, located about 5 kilometers from Noto, is a historical and religious site. Founded in 1700, the hermitage is situated in the “Valle dei Pizzoni,” where San Corrado Confalonieri lived as a hermit from 1322 to 1351. In addition to the sanctuary, it includes a cave where the saint prayed and slept.
Corrado Confalonieri, born in 1290, renounced his wealth to embrace monastic life and settled in Noto in 1340. Every ten years, the silver urn containing his relics is carried in procession to the Hermitage. The interior of the hermitage is decorated with a marble statue of San Corrado, an 18th-century Crucifix, and a museum with votive offerings from the faithful. The Cave of San Corrado, accessible via a staircase, is a cavity where the saint spent part of his eremitic life and is now a place of devotion with objects left by the faithful.
