Basilica of Santissimo Salvatore

Style and General Description

The Basilica of Santissimo Salvatore, built starting from 1767, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, with a facade characterized by a lattice above the entrance portal. Inside, frescoes and paintings testify to the fusion between late Baroque and Neoclassicism. The basilica also houses sculptures and valuable relics.

Features and Curiosities

The basilica is part of a vast monumental complex of nearly 11,000 square meters, with various architectural styles. The former Monastery of Santissimo Salvatore, built in the Baroque style, has two facades and houses the Civic Archaeological Museum of Noto. An interesting fact is the story of a young knight who hid in a sugar chest to meet a maid in the monastery, giving rise to a popular saying in Noto: “sugnu matri badissa ‘nta ‘sta cascia ri zuccuru” (mother abbess, I am in this sugar chest). This expression is still used today in Noto to mean “I am in this world of troubles.” The Seminary of Santissimo Salvatore, built between 1945 and 1955, completes the monumental complex, including various structures and spaces.
