Church of the Most Holy Crucifix

Style and General Description

The Church of the Most Holy Crucifix is a place of worship in the upper part of Noto. Built between 1715 and 1730, it is attributed to the architect Rosario Gagliardi. This church is the second largest in Noto after the Cathedral of San Nicolò and houses treasures, including an 18th-century golden cross, a statue of the Madonna della Neve by Francesco Laurana, and a relic of the Holy Thorn from the crown of Christ.

Features and Curiosities

The church replaced a previous building destroyed in the earthquake of 1693. The current facade has two orders, with a third added in the 1950s and then removed. Inside, the Landolina chapel is famous for its stuccoes and frescoes, while the chapel on the right of the transept houses the Madonna della Neve by Laurana. Other artworks include a golden cross by Vincenzo Rotondo and paintings by Costantino Carasi on the vault. The church also houses a thorn from the crown of Christ and Romanesque lions from the old church of Noto Antica.
