The Cathedral of San Nicolò, a late local Baroque architectural monument, is situated at the center of a scenic staircase dominating the Municipio Square. The facade combines Baroque and classical elements, with a triple flight of stairs, symbolizing the harmony between religious and civil power. Comprising three different bodies, the central one is flanked by the left one with the bell tower and the right one with the clock tower.
The history of the cathedral dates back to 1693 when the Ark of San Corrado was placed to mark the foundation site of the Mother Church of Noto. It houses the Urn of San Corrado, a precious relic containing the remains of Noto’s patron saint, and numerous valuable artworks. The feast of San Corrado is celebrated twice a year with a procession through the streets of Noto. Despite repeated collapses and restorations, the cathedral is now a symbol of rebirth for the city and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto.
