Church of San Carlo Borromeo

Style and General Description

The Church of San Carlo Borromeo, a late Baroque project by Rosario Gagliardi in 1730, features a façade with concave and convex lines. The interior is adorned with eighteenth-century frescoes and stuccoes, comprising three aisles and a main altar. The Evangelists are depicted in the pendentives of the dome, while four statues of the Cardinal Virtues are positioned against the pillars supporting the dome.

Features and Curiosities

Once the residence of the Jesuits of Noto, this church served as a vice-cathedral during the reconstruction of the Cathedral of San Nicolò, housing the Silver Ark containing the remains of San Corrado Confalonieri, the city’s patron saint. The terrace of the bell tower was used as a setting for some scenes in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1960 film “L’Avventura,” providing a panoramic view of the city of Noto.
